Ah ha, thanks.  It looks like Reportlab 3.0 does more or less what I need.

Unfortunately, Reportlab 3.0 bumps the minimum Python version up to 2.7,
and I'm stuck with Python 2.6.6 for now (which is the latest packaged
for Scientific Linux).  Hacking __init__.py to reduce the minimum
version back to 2.6 seems to work though, but what is likely to break if
I run a hacked Reportlab 3.0 against Python 2.6.6?
