I finally found out, that my problem is indeed rooted in an gcc/glibc issue as several bug reports on http://bugs.gentoo.org show. It seems that compiling glibc-2.3.1 with gcc-3.2.1 causes these bugs, so recompiling glibc with gcc-3.2 and then Python cirumvents all those issues.
