On Windows 2000 SP4, Python 2.4 (Python 2.3 untested) it works for me as 
expected.
Perhaps an XP related wx issue?

Could be then - I get the same thing on two different machines
(different versions of Python, but both running XP SP2).

That's a known problem of wxPython unicode on Windows.
(It's the same in the wxPy demo.)
