I eventually switched back to stand-alone mode and resolved the issue there. Basically, the RewriteRules I had copied into http.conf weren't hitting. And when I manually entered the port, Ajax calls would fail (as-designed). I eventually realized that the rules needed to be placed in the VirtualDirectory sections directly.
