From what I saw there it looks to me like it might be much easier to just download the files from within a separate thread. I don't know what exactly you want to achieve of course, but from your first post my impression was that using threads should not be overly difficult. Unfortunately I have no experience with asyncio at all, so I have no idea if things could be handled considerably easier using it instead of threads.
