I'm not so sure about a portfolio per se. But experience
on real world projects, including open source endeavours,
with live, working code is definitely a plus. In addition,
experience of working on such code will potentially
be of benefit during the selection process if asked
to create code to a brief (as I was in two job
applications, albeit in Java not Python).
