One might say that's the primary thing that Povray does provide (in such 
a simple case).

I don't remember whether Povray ordinarily takes into account the 
distance between the light source and the object.  It's not clear from 
the inquiry whether that's desired here.

It would seem simplest to skip the VP step and write a Povray 
description of the height-field.  Use an orthographic camera!
