No, unfortunately IDLE (and its variant VIDLE) don't attach .py as the default. It would seem useful for someone to change IDLE/VIDLE to do that, but it's not currently something you can set in the configurations. Searching the VPython archives and googling I found various schemes for restoring the behavior that used to be available for starting IDLE (or VIDLE) by right-clicking a .py file, but I couldn't get any of these to work. Maybe someone else on this list has found a way. I agree that it was a very convenient scheme.
