Apparently, that has to be built from source as 2.9.x is not in the
repositories. I can do that, but I get an error message that GStreamer is
not found. However, according to my package manager, GStreamer is
installed on the system.

The source you need is wxPython-2.9.4.0 not 2.8. Sorry.
to apply the patch go to the wxPython-src-2.9.4.0 directory (not the
wxPython directory that it contains) and type:
patch -p0 < path/to/the/patch/file
Let us know if that works!
