Thanks so much for the comment about XP binaries and link to archive page for wxPython binaries. I now have 'wxPython2.8-win64-unicode-2.8.12.1-py27' installed on my Win 7 64 bit PC and all is working.

Unfortunately the XP binaries and libraries don't work well at Win7.
That's the feedback from SAE users at Win7.

You'll find current and older wxPython releases at the SF download page http://sourceforge.net/projects/wxpython/files/wxPython/.
