Carsten, Thanks so much for the comment about XP binaries and link to archive page for wxPython binaries. I now have 'wxPython2.8-win64-unicode-2.8.12.1-py27' installed on my Win 7 64 bit PC and all is working. You'll find current and older wxPython releases at the SF download page http://sourceforge.net/projects/wxpython/files/wxPython/.
