If you'll remove this feature, I could easily update my code to use derived classes. But I think that many other users (who do not read this mailing-list) will be surprised to see their custom code getting erased. It is up to you to decide how important it is to keep backward compatibility. You could start by depreciating this feature and prompt users of this feature that it would be removed in the future. Maybe you could also make the unicode string changes you want and warn users that they could have problems with it. (My code only uses ASCII, so I don't think it will effect me.)
