Sizer in top level frame is just a thin red line

I've just installed wxglade on my xubuntu 15.10 system. I can't get very far because there seems to be something fundamentally wrong with the initial creation of the first frame and sizer. I'm following the tutorial, I create a frame which is called frame_1, that appears OK but the sizer that comes with it just shows as a thin (few pixels wide) bar across the top of the frame. If I click on the sizer it turns red but that's all that happens. If I close the design window and re-open it then it re-opens as a tiny little window, I can drag a corner to make it larger and get back to the empty (hatched) frame with a thin sizer across the top.
