I have un- and re-installed wxPython using homebrew and could not 
reproduce the issue any more.

Unfortunately I'm not too familiar with macOS and so I have no idea how 
to continue.

Are you using the system Python 2.7? This was the one where I initially 
could reproduce the issue. On the brew version, I never saw problems.
