An array of clickable widgets

Thank you for reading this.

I have a two dimensional array of squares displayed on a panel and I'd
like to have those squares bound to a mouse click. I could build an
array of buttons but I'd much rather have some sort of blank square widget.

So, is there such a widget (I haven't found one) or is this a job for a
custom widget?

At the moment I have a complicated arrangement of tracking where the
mouse is on the panel. There has to be a better method.
