In case minidom is not a requirement, you can use lxml.etree:

  >>> import lxml.etree as et
  >>> finditems = et.XPath("//tb:toolbaritem[@tb:visible = 'false']",
                        {'tb' : "http://openoffice.org/2001/toolbar"})
  >>> tree = et.parse("myfile.xml")
