Planning a project is the most important part and the first step is to define what you're solving. The success of your project is measured by whether or not it comes close to addressing its purpose and defining the right scope is crucial. The worst outcome is you've wasted your time--I have had projects that I wished I had given up at the beginning. Start by thinking big enough to identify what it takes to address the problem. Do a bit of top-down design to identify the toughest parts and the most significant limitations. Then, start scaling down. Think of what the minimum is that you'd call success (maybe it's just completing part of your design and publishing it online--that's valuable). Sometimes it's better to research and tackle the tough parts first and sometimes better to just start building and make incremental progress. It's really up to you and how you work best to do that.
