I've had the same trouble with connection as well.  I am considering
soldering header pins onto the active electrodes similar to Joe Street's
active electrodes: http://openeeg.sourceforge.net/doc/hw/joe_ae/

FWIW, I also had a friend with a shaved head try to use them and could not
get a successful connection.  So, it may not be an issue with the contact.
I might have some other issue instead.
