Possibly you have more than one MPI version installed, and you compiled MPB 
with one but are running it with the other.  This could cause the problem you 
described.

You mentioned that you were using MPICH, but LAM is also commonly installed on 
Linux clusters.  (And in general I recommend LAM over MPICH, although I believe 
LAM has been superseded by Open MPI.)
