guile-1..8.4 error

hi mpb users,
i'm trying to install guile-1.8.4 on my unix system (gcc 3.4.3 Ma,drakelinux 10.2), and when i try to configure it, i've got this message:
checking size of char... configure: error: cannot compute sizeof (char)
so i'm trying to install guile-1.6.4 instead of guile-1.8.4 and it's was succefully installed on my machine but when i'm trying to install libctl 3.0.2 it says
configure: error: Guile could not be found
i appreciate any help and thanks you for your help
