The serial HDF5 might not work at all on a large supercomputer,  
because the way MPB does parallel I/O using the serial HDF5 library is  
somewhat hackish.  However, I'm not sure if the parallel version of  
HDF5 works correctly with the current version of MPB either,  
unfortunately; I've had reports of it hanging too, but I haven't tried  
it for a while.
