To compile stuff using HDF5, you need to install the "-dev" package  
for HDF5, in particular libhdf5-serial-dev for the serial HDF5 version.

(I wish the Debian/Ubuntu package maintainer would upgrade h5utils to  
1.11.1 ....they are still using 1.10, which has a bug in finding the  
colormap files as you've encountered.  Perhaps the original maintainer  
doesn't have time to work on it --- if there are any Debian developers  
among MPB's users, you might look into helping maintain the h5utils  
package.)
