MPB users, I am modeling a photonic crystal slab structure (air in dielectric) with n= 2.4 for the dielectric. I want to seal the top and bottom of the slab with a glass cladding layer n=1.46. In my simulation, I have the cladding layers the same thickness of the dielectric slab (0.9 a). This 'sandwich' structure is surrounded by air. I am wondering what expression to use for the light cone when I plot the band structure. My intuition tells me the glass layer would still do the index guiding in -z, even though it is smaller in thickness than the surrounding air and the light cone would be ck/n(glass). Or is it the air that does the guiding or is there some "effective" light cone expression? This is really more of a physics question I suppose than advice on MPB. Any thoughts?
