All right, seems I got it. Nasty... The first line of libtool reads

#! /bin/sh

That blank space after '#!' causes the system shell not to be invoked
correctly which resulted in a tiny line

../../libtool: line 1: ELF: command not found

in the make output. Now the toolbar.a looks good. I'll report soon.
