Missing menu and toolbar: possible solution

Hi there,

just managed to solve the problem of the missing menus and toolbars in
the project window on my system. I'm not completely sure which of the
changes I made actually was the one that corrected the problem. Here are
two of the things I did:

* deinstall the (Debian) packages libgtkextra17-dev and libgtkextra17
that were unnecessarily installed on my system
* install gdk-imlib1-dev (missing file "gdk-imlib.h" caused a non-fatal
error in the configure script)

Could anybody (Kunal?) try out whether one of these changes solves the
problem?

Apart, I did a whole bunch of addition changes to the build-system that
I cannot easily sort out at the moment.
