Gtk+Extra 2.1.1 Resizing the plotcanvas area

Folks,

I am using gtkextra to show a simple line graph with 5 series of data
(or lines), loosely based on the testrealtime.c example.  

The question I have is "How do you automatically resize the plotcanvas
area? or is that even possible?"  If the parent window is maximized I
would like the plot area to adjust its size both up or down.

My code structure is as follows:

Top_level_window->GtkVbox->GtkEventbox->GtkNotebook->notebook_page->scrolled_window->GtkPlotCanvas->GtkPlot
