installing on suse9.0

I am trying to install gtkextra/scigraphica on suse 9.0. I have pretty much the full gnome system installed and gtk-config is located in /opt/gnome/bin, which is in the path. However when I run configure in the gtkextra directory I get this error. *** The gtk-config script installed by GTK could not be found *** If GTK was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in *** your path, or set the GTK_CONFIG environment variable to the *** full path to gtk-config. I've tried adding the full path to the environment with no change. Any hints greatly appreciated!
