I apologize - I didn't see your question! As a chemistry librarian, I
have tried over the years to solve the "group reference" problem.
Endnote gets close with its "Grouped References" feature, but there are
some problems with this feature.

The main problem is that if you "group" references, then later cite one
of the references in the group, that reference is pulled out of the
group and assigned the next citation number. My two solutions are:

Solution I. Create a substitute group record as a reference type you are
unlikely to use in chemistry, such as "film or broadcast".

Step 1. New reference > Reference type: Film or Broadcast Enter formated
citation in the TITLE field as follows, inserting the desired
sub-numbering:
a) B. M. Trost, Chem. Eur. J. 1998, 4, 2405-2412; b) H. J. Ache, Angew.
Chem. 
1989, 101, 1-21; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. Engl. 1989, 28, 1-20; c) H. Frey,
Angew. 
Chem. 1998, 110, 2313-2318; Angew. Chem. Int.

Step 2. Modify your output style to include the Film and Broadcast
reference type in the bibliography template section of the style.
Include the Title field as the sole data for this reference type.

Step 3. Insert this record into the manuscript where needed.

Caveat: When referring to individual references within this group, the
author now has to manually insert the in-text citation notation as "1a"
for the Trost reference.

Solution II. Use the "Grouped Reference" option under Numbering in teh
CITATION Template.

Step 1. Under GROUPED REFERENCES, check USE ONE NUMBER FOR REFERENCES
ALWAYS CITED TOGETHER. Click in the SEPARATE GROUP REFERENCES IN THE
BIBLIOGRAPHY WITH
  box. Type ". x) "  (.<SPACE>x)<SPACE>).
This step inserts a place holder for paragraph numbering (a), (b), (c),
etc. 
which you need to manually enter after your final format of your
document. You cannot use EndNote to insert a reference already used in a
group because EndNote extracts that reference from the group and
renumbers it.

If you want to re-cite 1a, you need to place your cursor in the correct
location and type 1a with the proper formatting (e.g. superscript).

Step 2.  After you format the final copy of the manuscript, make a copy
of the manuscript and remove Endnote field codes:  WORD > TOOLS >
ENDNOTE > Remove Field codes.

Step 3. Edit the group references in your bibliography, substituting
letters for the "x)". Substitute "a" for the first reference in the
group, "b for the second, etc.


Neither solution is very attractive to writers. I'd appreciate how
others have solved the problem.
