easy recovery from forgetting --no-delete?

Say upon forgetting the --no-delete of mknmz, one blows away 99% of
one's database... but it seems like the database files are about the
same size as before... does that mean that it might be possible to
undelete deleted documents somehow, without hours and hours of
remaking the database?
