Oops, it should have been

  int try_count = 0;
  while (true)
    {
      try
        {
          (do stuff)
          break;
        }
      catch (Xapian::DatabaseModifiedError &e)
        {
          if (try_count > 0) throw e;
          database.reopen();
          try_count++;
        }
    }
