censorship, says author and =E2=80=9Cethical hacker=E2=80=9D Ankit Fadia.=
 His new book, How to=20
Unblock Everything on the Internet, offers 50 workarounds for most common=
=20
blocks. Fadia says the book is for =E2=80=9Cnon-technical users=E2=80=9D,=
 and many of the tips=20
are indeed extremely simplistic - from suggestions such as using Google=20
Translate and viewing Web pages as emails, to more complex systems such a=
s=20
setting up VPNs (virtual private networks) and information about proxies.=
 The=20
book offers little that is new or unique, but people who aren=E2=80=99t f=
amiliar or=20
comfortable with technology will find it helpful.

Fadia is not respected among hackers, who accuse him of being inexperienc=
ed and=20
lacking depth of knowledge, and of making a quick buck out of information=
 that=20
is freely available on the Internet. Despite this, Fadia remains one of t=
he few=20
well-known hackers in India, and even as he acknowledges the allegations=20
against him, he is quick to point out that his goal is not to write for t=
he=20
technological elite, but for everyone. Edited excerpts from an interview:


What was your goal in writing this book? Who are the people that need to =
read=20
this?

I think everyone should be reading this book today. In December, I heard =
(Union=20
minister) Kapil Sibal talk about censoring social networking sites, and I=
=20
started to think about government bans and blocks. If India starts to cov=
er up=20
sites like China does, then the people need to know how to work around th=
is.=20
Social media and Google are powerful tools, and blocking them is an=20
undemocratic attack on freedom of speech. I started writing these tips fo=
r=20
college-goers and office workers, whose internal company networks needles=
sly=20
cut off large parts of the Internet, but today this kind of knowledge is=20
something everyone should have.
