Don=E2=80=99t nail the coffin shut on RIM just yet. Following a shakeup o=
f=20
executive leadership, and the launch of BlackBerry Cloud Service and=20
Office 365 integration, RIM announced today that the BlackBerry 7 OS has=20
received FIPS 140-2 certification.

Both the BlackBerry 7 and BlackBerry 7.1 operating systems have been=20
awarded FIPS 140-2 certification by both the National Institute of=20
Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States, as well as the=20
Communications security Establishment Canada (CSEC) in Canada. The FIPS=20
140-2 certification is required under the Federal Information Security=20
Management Act of 2002 (FISMA), so government agencies and businesses=20
that wish to work with those government agencies need accepted mobile=20
devices.

Scott Totzke, Senior Vice President, BlackBerry Security at Research In=20
Motion, proclaims, =E2=80=9CWith all of the latest BlackBerry smartphones=
 and=20
the PlayBook tablet certified under the FIPS program, government and=20
security-conscious customers can deploy our entire range of products=20
with confidence.=E2=80=9D

FIPS 140-2 isn=E2=80=99t the only security accolade RIM has earned either=
. The=20
BlackBerry 7 OS has also been awarded Common Criteria EAL4+=20
certification, and the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet received FIPS 140-2=20
acceptance back in mid-2011.
