Because non-root cannot read port unreachable errors in ICMP. http://nmap.org/nmap_doc.html -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Robert Larsen Sent: Monday, October 07, 2013 7:31 AM To: ToddAndMargo; [email protected] Subject: Re: nmap root vs user question Not sure, but maybe nmap tries ping probes if it is allowed to. ICMP requires raw sockets which require root or CAP_NET_RAW capability. So my guess is that when you run as root, you start out with a ping, which indicates the host to be down. Try 'nmap -P0 -p T:5020,5900 192.168.202.210' as root. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Securing Apache Web Server with thawte Digital Certificate In this guide we examine the importance of Apache-SSL and who needs an SSL certificate.
