RE: Beginning a Career In Network Security

Personally I doubt a military career is needed but it probably won't hurt
to have a security clearance.

On a note about all these certifications that we mentioned.  How many of
us here are actually certified in UNIX, CISSP, CCIE-Sec, etc and that we
utilize all those skills?  I'm still wondering if we need so many of them.
I have over a dozen of certifications (AIX, SP, HACMP, Solaris,
E10K, HP-UX, CCNP/CSS1, Oracle, etc) but I always like doing UNIX.  I'm
not really using my Oracle/Cisco skills anymore.  The good thing is I
did most of those certs just for fun anyway so I don't feel too bad.

I guess it never (usually doesn't) hurt to have a few certs...  Actually,
I'm thinking about Linux and CISSP now...  hmmm...

On a serious note, knowing all these pieces has helped me quite a few
times expecially when I walk into a shop that has no one who knows
how to do this and that.  To save time, you can at least help them
get things done so they don't have to call Support.  Moreover, it
also helps when doing low-level troubleshooting and performance tuning.
