Before I switched to firehol years ago, I used shorewall, which at least 
shares the philosophy of having a fairly simple, text-based config files. 
Shorewall isn't quite as straightforward as firehol, but isn't too bad. It 
does have IPv6 support, and seems well maintained. It might be worth a look.
