configuring NAT port forward

This is a request for assistance. 

My colleague has been struggling to configure a port forward from the WAN -> LAN with Monowall and PFSense.

Is such a forward possible or is it only possible to port forward from the WAN to the OPT interface?

If it is possible to configure from the WAN -> LAN, below you will see a list of steps he is proceeding with. Is there any thing obvious missing?

  (1) Setup Monowall (LAN and WAN)
  (2) Configure the incoming NAT port forward (automatically creating the Firewall rule).
  (3) Apply and save settings reboot the system. 

Any pointers would be great.
