So you need a computer and an AP. :)  Note that the consumer grade "AP" 
you mentioned was probably a router.  I do not know of any true APs in 
the consumer space.  And the commercial APs (like the EnGenius I 
mentioned) are an entirely different class.  Like I get good signal at 
the neighbors house. :)

As for a cheap m0n0wall router, you can still find some Wyse terminal 
servers with a PCI slot for about $15 on eBay.  Add in a dual port nic 
for another $15 and you have a commercial router for $30!  And $100 for 
an AP that will knock your neighbors off the net for $90, and you are set.
