I will join my voice to everyone else expressing sorrow at this news.  

 

Manuel, you have brought to all of us an extraordinarily good and reliable
firewall. Free of charge! I have been using it for most of the 12 years the
product has been available to us. Over the years, I kept looking at other
products PFSense, and OPNSense included. But I always decided to stay with
M0n0wall for its simplicity and efficiency. 

 

We have no right to ask Manuel for anything.  We all benefited from a great
favor for 12 years. I for one am very grateful for this. I wish M0n0wall
would continue to be maintained, but I fully respect the decision. Manuel,
best success in all your future endeavors. And again, a very special thank
you for M0n0wall.

 

Now, I am somewhat puzzled with the proposed way forward. I looked at
PFSense and OPNSense, as I said, and I don't see why OPNSense would be
preferred to PFSense. It seems heavier in terms of hardware requirements,
less extendable (although this is not something I am looking for) and
somewhat unstable still at the moment. Knowing how Manuel brought us such a
great firewall, I wonder what he sees that I am missing in my evaluation of
OPNSense.
