Reading this repeatedly, I'll probably not consider pfSense as a
favourite either 
For the time being I still prefer m0n0wall, even though some APU
hardware I use seem almost excessively powerful.

Would it be even possible not to fork? The basis being the relatively
liberal FreeBSD licence would perhaps make it easier to just continue,
which might be advantageous in many respects ...

... provided of course that Manuel Kasper would consent, with or without
his further engagement. If it's a no, that would have to be respected,
no questions asked. Then a fork would seem one of the remaining options.

If possible upgrading to FreeBSD 10.x? => better hardware support (such
as WiFi cards etc.) etc. etc. But probably not as easy as it may seem.

I'm ready to help here and there, no coding please, probably things such
as hosting, possibly doing web editing/communications things or what
ever little there may be.
If it does, the project should continue modestly, rather low profile, IMHO.
