I suppose it must have been complaining about the server name. There were some "cant find host" errors earlier in the log. I've changed to the uk pool which has been more successful. FWIW I had originally tried to get ntpdate help as follows: # ntpdate -h ntpdate: unknown option -h usage: ntpdate [-bBdqsv] [-a key#] [-e delay] [-k file] [-p samples] [-o version#] [-r rate] [-t timeo] server ... Which wasn't exactly what I was expecting but at least it got the command line options... however, no "u". Hence my stratospheric jump to the wrong conclusion.
