I don't have your Cisco ATA, but I do use the Primus ATA with the Lingo 
service. I did have it running at one time in front of my 
smoothwall.....until I found out how easy it was to log into the ATA 
from the Internet and fiddle with the settings, so I moved it behind the 
Smoothwall, where it still works fine.

I too tried to use the DHCP on the ATA, but my smoothwall never could 
get an IP address form the ATA, so I set the "green" interface on the 
ATA, if you will, to a static IP address, and changed my "Red" 
Smoothwall interface to a static IP address in the same subnet as the 
ATA. This worked just fine, but I quickly found out that the ATA would 
not forward all the ports I wanted to the Smoothwall unless I added them 
all to the ATA config.  Moving the ATA behind the Smoothwall represented 
no problems (so far), since the ATA inititated the connection back to 
the VoIP service. The only thing to watch out for would be things like 
firmware updates that might be started by the VoIP service 
computers....in that case you would need to open the port to the ATA. I 
put my ATA on an "Orange" interface, just to be safe.
