SP2's firewall only manages incoming traffic. It doesn't block outgoing 
traffic at all.

In a small network there's not a huge benefit of having a personal 
firewall as well as a decent border firewall such as Smoothwall. However 
on larger networks it can be beneficial, as there are likely to be threats 
within the network (e.g. a salesman bringing in a worm-infested laptop). 

IME, XP SP2 has caused no problems at all with Smoothwall, and most of the 
"problems" reported with SP2 are in fact due to it "doing what it says on 
the tin", e.g. blocking arbitrary incoming connections. It is always worth 
having an alternative browser installed to check any browser-related 
problems, and many people prefer Mozilla and Firefox for various reasons 
(but there have been a number of security issues with them also, so caveat 
browser...:)
