List Server for topics in Digital Forensic Science

Greetings All,

This is an invitation for anyone interested in subscribing to the new
DFSci list server. [DFSci is short for Digital Forensic Science.]

There are several useful, effective, heavily used and relied upon list
servers that currently exist. Our intent is not to compete with any of
them. The belief is that an on-line forum that concentrates on the
research aspects of our discipline is not currently available, so we are
attempting to fill that gap. It should be noted that the DFSci list
servers focus doesn't limit anyone's ability to subscribe and
participate in any way. Although many folks from academia will be
subscribing you don't need a Ph.D.. or J.D. or any degree for that
matter to check in and chime in. Input from all perspectives in all
domains is essential to success here.

At the 2003 DFRWS this last August attendees agreed that a list server
whose "focus" would be on BASIC and APPLIED RESEARCH and COLLABORATION
in the field of Digital or Information Forensics would be of  added
value to the field. It would allow a continuation and extension of the
discussions and relationships formed at the annual face-to-face
meetings. DFRWS staff agreed to host the service and we have done so.
There are several administrative and bureaucratic reasons why it took
this long to implement.  Those have been addressed and should not occur
again.

That page will contains a link pointing to a series of potential topics
discussed at the DFRWS 03 meeting in Cleveland. These topics are not
bounds they're simply areas that attendees mentioned as being of
interest and some deemed ripe for on-line collaboration. [If the link
isn't there yet please contact me and I will send you a copy.]

The page will be informally moderated and there is no restriction on
initial subscription to the list, however the policy will be enforced by
a group of folks with moderator authority. In addition, DFRWS has kept
the phpbb forums available in case any group of DFSci collaborators want
to use them. Due to relatively infrequent use, the current forum content
will be archived and cleared to make room for forums designated and
defined by the users of the service.
