"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you,=20
then they fight you, then you win." -- Mahatma Ghandi.

Well if Fox's new comedy show "Breaking In" is any
indication, infosec has now entered Ghandi's second=20
stage. http://goo.gl/ZpLDp [youtube] (hat tip to Adam=20
O'Donnell for this humorous find, and Sam Bowne for=20
the quote/quip)

But on a slightly more serious note.

CanSecWest is nearing in the second week of March, and=20
this year I've waited on sending out the CFP note/reminder.=20
It's been up on the site for a while with a Dec 29 deadline,=20
but this is the real last call for submissions. If you don't get=20
them in by this weekend they won't make the selections=20
review process next week. We'll try to announce the=20
selections the week following. After 11 years, most=20
of you should know the drill, but for those who haven't=20
submitted or attended before, the fine print and usual=20
further information is attached below.

Other info:

We are doing more dojo training courses =A0than ever this=20
year (17!) and they will be up for registration next week.=20
I've also confirmed with Aaron/TippingPoint/HP that we=20
will again be holding PWN2OWN with both browser and=20
mobile targets, so stand by for some announcements=20
there. There will also be some other new experiments=20
and conference goings on, some fascinating keynotes=20
that have been invited, as well as some interesting new=20
sponsors exhibiting new security wares that you'll see=20
announced on the conference site in the coming weeks,=20
but for now, get your talk proposals in so that our grumpy,=20
cynical, and battle-scarred reviewers can complain about=20
them, err, I mean provide informative feedback.;-)

cheers,

The usual CFP boilerplate info:

Call For Papers

=A0 =A0The CanSecWest 2011 CFP is now open.

=A0 =A0Deadline is January 17th, 2011.

CanSecWest CALL FOR PAPERS

=A0 =A0VANCOUVER, Canada -- The twelfth annual CanSecWest applied technical
=A0 =A0security conference - where the eminent figures in the international
=A0 =A0security industry will get together share best practices and
=A0 =A0technology - will be held in downtown Vancouver at the the Sheraton
=A0 =A0Wall Centre on March 9-11, 2011. The most significant new discoveries
=A0 =A0about computer network hack attacks and defenses, commercial security
=A0 =A0solutions, and pragmatic real world security experience will be
=A0 =A0presented in a series of informative tutorials.

=A0 =A0The CanSecWest meeting provides international researchers a relaxed,
=A0 =A0comfortable environment to learn from informative tutorials on key
=A0 =A0developments in security technology, and to collaborate and socialize
=A0 =A0with their peers in one of the world's most scenic cities - a short
=A0 =A0drive away from one of North America's top skiing areas.

=A0 =A0The CanSecWest conference will also feature the availability of the
=A0 =A0Security Masters Dojo expert network security sensei instructors, and
=A0 =A0their advanced, and intermediate, hands-on training courses -
=A0 =A0featuring small class sizes and practical application exercises to
=A0 =A0maximize information transfer.

=A0 =A0We would like to announce the opportunity to submit papers, and/or
=A0 =A0lightning talk proposals for selection by the CanSecWest technical
=A0 =A0review committee. This year we will be doing one hour talks, and some
=A0 =A0shorter talk sessions.

=A0 =A0Please make your paper proposal submissions before January 17th,
=A0 =A02011.

=A0 =A0Some invited papers have been confirmed, but a limited number of
=A0 =A0speaking slots are still available. The conference is responsible for
=A0 =A0travel and accommodations for the speakers. If you have a proposal f=
or
=A0 =A0a tutorial session then please make your submission =A0by emailing a=
=20
=A0 =A0synopsis of the material and your biography, papers and, speaking
=A0 =A0background to [email protected] . Only slides will be needed=
=20
=A0 =A0for the March paper deadline, full text does not have to be submitte=
d - but
=A0 =A0will be accepted if available. This year we will be opening =A0CanSe=
cWest=20
=A0 =A0presentation guidelines to include talks not in English (particularly
=A0 =A0Chinese and Korean) which we will offer to translate for the speaker=
=20
=A0 =A0if you are not a native English speaker.=20
=A0
=A0 =A0The CanSecWest 2011 conference consists of tutorials on technical
=A0 =A0details about current issues, innovative techniques and best practic=
es
=A0 =A0in the information security realm. The audiences are a multi-national
=A0 =A0mix of professionals involved on a daily basis with security work:
=A0 =A0security product vendors, programmers, security officers, and network
=A0 =A0administrators. We give preference to technical details and new
=A0 =A0education for a technical audience.

=A0 =A0The conference itself is a single track series of presentations in a
=A0 =A0lecture theater environment. The presentations offer speakers the
=A0 =A0opportunity to showcase on-going research and collaborate with peers
=A0 =A0while educating and highlighting advancements in security products a=
nd
=A0 =A0techniques. The focus is on innovation, tutorials, and education
=A0 =A0instead of product pitches. Some commercial content is tolerated, but
=A0 =A0it needs to be backed up by a technical presenter - either giving a
=A0 =A0valuable tutorial and best practices instruction or detailing
=A0 =A0significant new technology in the products.

=A0 =A0Paper proposals should consist of the following information:
=A0 =A0 1. Presenter, and geographical location (country of origin/passport)
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0and contact info (e-mail, postal address, phone, fax).
=A0 =A0 2. Employer and/or affiliations.
=A0 =A0 3. Brief biography, list of publications and papers.
=A0 =A0 4. Any significant presentation and educational
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0experience/background.
=A0 =A0 5. Topic synopsis, Proposed paper title, and a one paragraph
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0description.
=A0 =A0 6. Reason why this material is innovative or significant or an
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0important tutorial.
=A0 =A0 7. Optionally, any samples of prepared material or outlines ready.
=A0 =A0 8. Will you have full text available or only slides?
=A0 =A0 9. Language of preference for submission.
=A0 =A010. Please list any other publications or conferences where this
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0material has been or will be published/submitted.

=A0 =A0Please include the plain text version of this information in your
=A0 =A0email as well as any file, pdf, sxw, ppt, or html attachments.

=A0 =A0Please forward the above information to [email protected]
=A0 =A0to be considered for placement on the speaker roster, or have your
=A0 =A0lightning talk scheduled. If you contact anyone else at our
=A0 =A0organization please ensure you also cc the submission address with
=A0 =A0your proposal or else it may be omitted from the review process.
