 We used a similar approach, which broke ''make distclean'' in the
 distributed tarball. This is the reason we reverted this behavior in
 [8950].

 A good base for implementing this feature is to revert [8950] itself, and
 then try to find a solution to the distclean problem. Using
 ''DIST_SUBDIRS'' might help, I'll check that.
