I ran into exactly the same thing. I tried Ubuntu 10.10 and Fedora 14, and
had far fewer challenges on Fedora. Conversely, I experienced the opposite
experience with Snort. I ended up going with Ubuntu for my snort sensors. I
just don't have the linux chops (or the patience) to stick with one
distribution and "make everything work" on it. So if you're like me, Fedora
would be my suggestion.
