Hello Dave,

I checked the instructions at the link you provided on a fresh VM with ubuntu 20.04 workstation, they seem to be OK (I found a few typos listed at the end of this email).

In your case, it seems that cmake fails to configure flex. This is done in snort3/cmake/FindFlexLexer.cmake. I tried to recreate your issue first messing up with find_package. I requested a version of flex that I don’t have, but the error signature was different. Next, I tried with find_path, and the failure signature matched. Perhaps on your host the header is at a different location? In my case I have it at /usr/include/FlexLexer.h. If this is the case, you can try to set FLEX_INCLUDE_DIR_HINT using option --with-flex-includes to match your location. If this is not your issue, you will have to debug cmake, perhaps by enabling –trace-expand in configure_cmake.sh when calling cmake. See cmake man page for details, the output is quite verbose and not easy to follow.

If you just prefer to start from scratch on a fresh install, these are the errors that I found at the link you referenced:

1. before clone daq install git

2. to install daq you have to sudo

3. link to gperftools is bad, use wget https://github.com/gperftools/gperftools/releases/download/gperftools-2.9/gperftools-2.9.0.tar.gz<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2Fgperftools%2Fgperftools%2Freleases%2Fdownload%2Fgperftools-2.9%2Fgperftools-2.9.0.tar.gz&data=05%7C01%7CDiop.Papa%40student.greenriver.edu%7C272621adcf2e4fc5d6ab08da3f3e7576%7Cfa40663e972749789bce776cf824bca5%7C0%7C1%7C637891834763625372%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=nwANI88AKTW2sntT0jxQczdINA%2FlU1T6exp18rTetKc%3D&reserved=0>

Subject: [Snort-users] Snort3 installation problem on Ubuntu 20.04 : CMake Error: The following variables are used in this project, but they are set to NOTFOUND

Hi I'm trying to install snort3 (snort version 3.1.29.0) on Ubuntu 20.04
following the instructions in
https://linoxide.com/install-snort-on-ubuntu/<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flinoxide.com%2Finstall-snort-on-ubuntu%2F&data=05%7C01%7CDiop.Papa%40student.greenriver.edu%7C272621adcf2e4fc5d6ab08da3f3e7576%7Cfa40663e972749789bce776cf824bca5%7C0%7C1%7C637891834763625372%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=J9XpBSAOBoLSVnFaeL8wBE%2BD6VWBIDjXh0VS26Nuznc%3D&reserved=0>

All goes well until I get to step 3 / sub-step 3. When I try to execute:

./configure_cmake.sh --prefix=/usr/local --enable-tcmalloc

it fails with the error message:

CMake Error: The following variables are used in this project, but they
are set to NOTFOUND.
Please set them or make sure they are set and tested correctly in the
CMake files:
FLEX_INCLUDES (ADVANCED)
used as include directory in directory
/root/snort-source-files/snort3/src
used as include directory in directory
/root/snort-source-files/snort3/src
used as include directory in directory
/root/snort-source-files/snort3/src

/root/snort-source-files/snort3/src
used as include directory in directory
/root/snort-source-files/snort3/src
   ...
   ......

Would you have any suggestions how I can get past this error, please?
Does anyone know of a how-to on the Web that will work for Ubuntu 20.04?
There is a whole bunch of them on multiple sites, but they all look like
a copy-and-paste from one original article...

Vytaly Gorbatov suspected that I did not have Flex installed, but in
fact I do have flex 2.6.4 installed.

With all best wishes,

Dave
