Well, for one, I don't think most people that could and would program a spam
filter in VBA would be able to use many of the more advanced spam features.
Things like Bayesian analysis are way beyond the scope of what most people
could write.  Or dns reverse lookups, sender id, public blacklists, etc.
This also wouldn't address virus filtering.  So, while your solution would
work for some individuals, if you're running your own servers it just seems
like way too much work for the benefit.  I think a better question is, why
spend money on something when they are plenty of quality FOSS solutions that
you can use, and if you want to learn how to write it yourself, the code's
there for you to make improvements.

You can create a distribution list in Microsoft Outlook and allso program
your own spam filter using VBA for outlook , just write some code for the
MAPI , ( Mail applications Programming Interface ) , why spend money on
something when you can learn to write it yourself.
