Well, for one, I don't think most people that could and would program a spam filter in VBA would be able to use many of the more advanced spam features. Things like Bayesian analysis are way beyond the scope of what most people could write. Or dns reverse lookups, sender id, public blacklists, etc. This also wouldn't address virus filtering. So, while your solution would work for some individuals, if you're running your own servers it just seems like way too much work for the benefit.
