Yes they are supported and used. A lot of stuff that used to be done
manually in 1.4 is automated because of udev in 2.0. Things like pcmcia do
not need a file to make it turn on and once you set your network up, the
interface names such as wan-1, wlan-1, dmz-1 and such have the mac address
recorded in udev and the ethernet settings. It does not matter after initial
setup whether lan-1 is eth0 or eth4.
