The only issue I have seen is when booting up from a cold system, not 
rebooting as the flip flop modem is in it's modem state and remains there 
due to the usb remaining energized during reboot. Once the system is up, 
unplugging the modem and then plugging it back in activates the modeswitch.

The workaround to this is to insert a manual line in rc.event.local for the 
purpose of booting from a cold system only but the less experienced user of 
these flip flop modems would have  a small amount of difficulty coming up 
with the right string. Mine looks like this for the current modem:

/usr/sbin/usb_modeswitch -v 0x19d2 -p 0x2000 -m 0x01 -M 
"5553424312345679000000000000061b000000020000000000000000000000"

This is merely a workaround to make the modem reconnect without issue upon 
the system finishing booting from a power off (cold) system. During a reboot 
running the command with rc.event.local does nothing as it is still in the 
modem state.
 
I reiterate that in any case, the modem can be plugged back in on the 
running system and modeswitch works every time for me. Having to unplug the 
modem during a very stale connection (rare) where ppp will not disconnect 
and plug it back in without having to type a command line to get the modem 
back is a great distance from where it was only a few weeks ago.
