My DNS server is located with my ISP on the RED interface and use 
dnsmasq on IPCop for my lan, so I don't have any external traffic for 
DNS. So I suspect I wouldn't see your problem. 

After editing rc.dnsmasq I haven't noticed any unusual performance to 
any of my services.
